A subtle and superb film that relies on crisp dialogue and excellent clear characterisation. Originally a stage play and it shows in its tight script. Excellent performances. If you like films with substance, give it a go.
Soppy in parts, silly in others, but still a very sweet film. Mind you, I like Dolly Parton so am partial to it. It leaves a feel-good, warm feeling inside you which is nice. It's a good Christmas family film that all ages can enjoy.
Not as good as the 1987 version. Louise Fletcher in the older version was a more wicked character than Ellen Burstyn. I rate Burstyn as one of the best American actresses ever and I possibly got used to her in gentler roles such as in "Alice doesn't live here anymore (1974)" or her excellent interpretation in "Walking Across Egypt (1999)", both of which are must see movies to witness her first-class superb acting. That said, I liked this Flowers version but I found it lacked the bite of the older version. I have not read the books so do not know how they compare.
A rather unlikely plot but all the same it is a very good crime mystery, ably acted by all. Edward G. Robinson excelled in these films, especially when playing a detective. As I said, not at all plausible but still extremely good.
This is a very good crime movie - not a western anyway as is stated. Ida Lupino once again shows her considerable acting talents. It's gritty, quite tense and based on true events with some alterations.
Old-fashioned story of romance among the rich and the young and the not-so-rich trying to marry wealth. I enjoyed it because I like these old-fashioned stories of times when behaviour and morals counted for something. A 22-year old Joan Crawford already showed the intensity of her acting in what was going to be a long and successful career.
Very old-fashioned as can be expected, but a good story stretching over many years of Millie's life. It's goat a bit of everything including a court case.
Excellent film-noir from the 50's (yet another one) and they certainly don't make them like this no more! Vastly superior in plot to many of the modern films which meander in and out of bedroom scenes having nothing to do with the plot. These get on with it with no time-wasting and extraneous material as eye candy or titillation - or needless special effects. A good script; a tight plot; good acting - it's got the lot. Never a dull moment!
Charming film. Charming story. First class acting. It also showcases the extraordinary acting talent of River Phoenix (2 years before his tragic death at age 23). The film feels very natural and the characters well fleshed out. I enjoyed every minute of it.
